Jaydeva’s Geeta Govindam, also known as Ashtapadi, is a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion composed in 12th Century. Ashtapdi was popular in India since the 13th Century. In the temples of Kerala Ashtapadi was sung in front of the ‘ Sopana, , the flight of steps leading to the sanctum sanctorum, in accompaniment to the mellifluous beat of Edakka. It gained currency as part of this tradition of Sopana music.
